Daemonhunters: The Ordo Malleus

This page is dedicated to my Warhammer 40,000 army. If you're wondering what Warhammer 40,000 is, it's basically a tabletop wargame in a futuristic setting played with miniature models that you assemble and paint yourself. Visit Games Workshop for more information, or check out the short documentary 'Get Rich or Roll the Die Trying' to see inside Dunedin's wargaming scene.

I started playing Warhammer 40,000 under 3rd edition with Space Marines, but then the Daemonhunters were released in 2003. The new Grey Knight models were fantastic (even now they are still some of the best), and they could ally with Imperial armies, so I decided to add some to my Space Marines. My collection of Grey Knights grew and soon I dropped the Marines and began fielding pure Grey Knight armies.

Pure Grey Knight armies are challenging to play, but rewarding. They also look fantastic on the table. Unfortunately the Daemonhunters codex is now one of the oldest. The 5th edition ruleset and recent codex releases have rendered many of the Daemonhunters' special abilities, rules and wargear obsolete. The Daemonhunters codex has had issues since its release, many of which have never been adequately answered by Games Workshop. Under present conditions, Daemonhunters are becoming a lot less fun to play. A new codex is badly needed, but as yet there is no sign of one on the horizon. Judging by what it known and/or rumoured about the release schedule, 2010 is the earliest we could hope to see it. I am seriously considering stowing the army away until it gets a new codex, but that may never eventuate given Games Workshop's worsening financial state (refer to last link).

Order of the Triune Crusade

The Most Holy Order of the Triune Crusade, 7th Legion of the Grey Knights (or OTC for short), is my customised Daemonhunters army, comprised solely of Grey Knight units. The OTC can currently field around 3000 points.

I use a custom colour scheme similar to the standard Grey Knight livery. The most significant difference is using dark blue instead of red, and insignia of my own design. Sadly, Citadel's 'Midnight Blue' has been discontinued, which is a pain since it is a major component of my colour scheme.

Conversions are a prominent feature of the army, particularly on the vehicles which would otherwise lack any distinctive Grey Knight features. The metal Grey Knight troops models are some of the best in the game - they're highly detailed, and although they're only two-piece models, there is a reasonable number of different bodies and arms and hence a good variety of possible combinations and poses. Their composition and level of detail mean there's a limited scope for conversion, but nor is there a tremendous need for it. The only disappointing models are the special weapons troopers (psycannons and incincerators), which are one-piece models that only come in one pose. The larger terminator models lend themselves quite well to weapon conversions.
